“Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.” (Matthew 9:17)
Wine is often symbolic of the Holy Spirit in the Bible. Why? The Holy Spirit and wine can have similar but not the same influence over people, causing them to be bold or do things they otherwise would not do, once their influences reach a certain threshold.
Ephesians 5:17-18 is very instructive about the relationship between wine and the Holy Spirit. It says, “Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit…” Wine is an intoxicant that ultimately leads to foolishness, if taken excessively. Proverbs 20:1 says, “Wine is a mocker, Strong drink is a brawler, And whoever is led astray by it is not wise.” The Holy Spirit, on the other hand, is also an intoxicant but He ultimately leads to knowing the will of God in any situation, if engaged excessively. John 16:13 says, “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.”
This was why Paul the Apostle engaged with the Holy Spirit so much that he wrote two-thirds of the New Testament. Writing to arguably the most proficient church in spiritual manifestations, the Church at Corinth, he said, “I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all” (1 Corinthians 14:18).
What has all this got to do with you being the new wineskin? It’s a reference to what you contain with you now that you are born-again. Hear me, all the while, God was looking to reside somewhere so He fashioned the infrastructure when He created human beings so that Adam was suited to His image and likeness (according to Genesis 1:26).
The ‘old wine’ that Jesus referred to in Matthew 9:17 is accounted for in Genesis 2:7 which says, “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” God breathed into Adam and Adam became a living being. That breath that God breathed into Adam was the ‘old wine.’ But the old wine and the old wineskin have been replaced since Adam subjected all of humanity to death by his original sin. The Bible says that after Jesus satisfied the demand of justice on the first Adam, he was raised by the glory of the Father to be a new type of being.
Romans 6:4 says, “Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” This newness of life was facilitated in such a way that God could now live in a new type of mankind, the God-kind. The Bible says, “For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings” (Hebrews 2:10)
The infrastructure of righteousness and true holiness was outfitted into the new creation, the person who is born again so that the Holy Spirit (the new wine) could be deposited inside you. Hallelujah!
In Ephesians 1:13-14, the Bible says, “In Him [Christ] you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.” Now, you are the new wineskin that holds the new wine. Every time you face a challenge, approach it with the knowledge of what you contain.
1 Corinthians 15:45 says, “And so it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.” Speak to the situation based on who you have in you.
And how do you do this? You shake the bottle vigorously by speaking in tongues and then, pour out the wine through prophetic utterances.
It is your Year of Joy! Be joyful today in Jesus’ name. Amen
