“But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you” (Matthew 5:44)
The Christian is a bastion of love with a limitless capacity to absorb hurt and absolve people of hurtful behavior. If this were not true, the Lord would not have told us to love our enemies. And so there will be tests to measure how much of this capacity you have learnt to exercise. For example, the Bible says in Romans 12:19-21, “Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
This means that love is a type of weapon that we deploy against people who mistreat us. Now if love is a weapon we use to respond to mistreatment, we ought to learn to celebrate when the opportunities to demonstrate love like this present themselves.
Hear me, don’t cry foul when people say malicious things about you or do things that seem unfair and unwarranted. James 5:13 AMPC says, “ Is anyone among you afflicted (ill-treated, suffering evil)? He should pray…” It didn’t say you should complain, retaliate or report them to the cops. He said, pray. Understand that when people are being unkind, it’s just a test and what do we do when tests come to us as believers? James 1:2 NIV says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds.”
Another thing, if you want to learn to respond automatically to ill-treatment, the God-way, stay away from vengeful people as well because vengeance is a communicable disease. Proverbs 22:24 says, “Make no friendship with an angry man, And with a furious man do not go, Lest you learn his ways And set a snare for your soul.”
So there are two things, we are going to make a practice of doing going forward. When insults or ill-treatment come, celebrate ferociously and look for ways to immediately return the ill treatment with massive amounts of kindness. Tell the offending persons you love them, buy them a gift of something you know they will appreciate or just render a service without expectation.
Child of God, Peter said in 1 Peter 3:9 NIV, “Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.”
You are a blesser. And no one or situation is going to manipulate you to be anything other than God created you to be.
Have a great day.
Faith-Filled Confession
I am called to inherit a blessing. Therefore, I celebrate in all situations. Nothing robs me of my joy. Rather, in situations of ill-treatment, I am full of joy! Hallelujah!
